What Is the Average Merchant Service Fee? (And Why Vegas Business Owners Pay Too Much)
One of the most common questions I get from business owners in Las Vegas is simple: what is the average merchant service fee?
The short answer is that most businesses pay somewhere between 1.5% and 3.5% of their card sales. Where you land in that range depends on how you take payments, what kind of cards your customers use, and how your account is priced.
What makes up a merchant service fee?
Every card payment has three layers of cost:
- Interchange. Set by Visa, Mastercard, and the other networks, and paid to the bank that issued the customer's card. This is the biggest piece.
- Network or assessment fees. A smaller cut that goes to the card brand itself.
- Processor markup. What your processor charges on top. This is the only part that changes from one provider to the next.
On top of that, some accounts add monthly, statement, PCI, or equipment charges.
Why your rate may be higher than average
A few things push your cost toward the top of the range:
- Keyed-in and online payments cost more than tapped or dipped cards because the risk of fraud is higher.
- Rewards and business cards carry higher interchange than basic debit cards.
- Tiered pricing can push a lot of your transactions into higher-cost buckets.
- Extra monthly charges raise your effective rate even when the advertised rate looks low.
What that looks like in real dollars
Say your business runs $50,000 a month in card sales. At 3%, that is $1,500 a month in processing, or $18,000 a year.
At $20,000 a month in card sales and the same rate, it is $600 a month and $7,200 a year.

How to find your real rate
Grab your last processing statement and find two numbers: your total card sales for the month and your total fees. Divide fees by sales. That is your effective rate, and it is the only number worth comparing.

How Las Vegas businesses lower or cover the cost
You have two options. You can shop for a lower rate, which helps a little. Or you can change how the cost is paid with a cash discount program, where your posted price is the card price and cash customers get a discount. That way the card cost is covered by the card price instead of your margin.
It is legal in Nevada with proper signage. More on that in Is the cash discount program legal in Nevada? And if you are comparing providers, read who is the cheapest merchant service.
Quick answers
What is the average credit card processing fee? Most businesses pay between 1.5% and 3.5% of card sales.
Why are online payments more expensive? When the card is not present, the fraud risk is higher, so the card networks charge more.
What is a good effective rate? It depends on your business type and card mix. The best way to know is to compare your current statement against a real quote.
