Best POS System for Martial Arts Schools in 2026: Clover vs Square and What It Really Costs
I've been doing jiu-jitsu for over 20 years. I'm a black belt, I've trained here in Las Vegas a long time, and I still coach private jiu-jitsu lessons in Las Vegas. So I know how a martial arts school really runs. Monthly dues, belt tests, private lessons, gis, rash guards, a kids' camp in the summer. A lot of money moving through one front desk.
These days I also run Elite Merchant Solutions, a merchant services company in Las Vegas. I sit down with gym owners every week, and most of them have no idea what they really pay to take a card. So here's the straight version. What Clover is, what it costs, how it stacks up against Square and the gym software you already know, and what I'd tell a friend.
What a Martial Arts School Needs From a Payment System
A school isn't a restaurant. You have three kinds of money coming in:
- Recurring dues. The same students, billed every month. This is your rent money.
- One-time charges. Belt tests, privates, seminars, tournament fees.
- Retail. Gis, belts, rash guards, gloves, drinks.
Most systems are great at one of these and weak at the others. That's why so many owners end up paying for two or three tools that don't talk to each other.
Clover for Martial Arts Schools: The Full Picture
Clover is owned by Fiserv, one of the biggest payment companies in the country. It's not just a card reader. It's hardware plus software plus an app market, so you can set it up for how your school works.
Where Clover shines for a gym is the front desk. Fast checkout, tap to pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, inventory for your gear wall, and solid reports so you know what came in this month.
Clover Hardware Prices
These are Clover's list prices when you buy direct, as of October 2026. Buying through a dealer like me, the price and plan can be different, so always get it in writing.
- Clover Station Duo, about $1,899. Full countertop setup with a screen that faces the student. The best fit for a busy front desk.
- Clover Station Solo, about $1,799. Countertop, but check before you buy. It comes with a swipe and chip reader, not a built-in tap to pay reader, so most schools are better off with the Duo or the Mini.
- Clover Mini, about $849. Small, takes every card type including tap. My pick for most schools.
- Clover Flex, about $749. Handheld. Good for tournaments, seminars and events away from the desk.
- Clover Go, about $199. A small reader that runs off your phone. Fine to start with.
Own your equipment. If someone puts a 48-month lease in front of you for a Clover terminal, walk away. Leases are one of the most common traps in this business, and you can't cancel them.
Clover Monthly Software Fees
This is the part nobody tells you up front. Clover charges a monthly software plan on top of the hardware. Buying direct, the plans run from about $29.95 a month for a Flex or Go up to $84.95 a month for the Services Growth plan on a countertop system. Every extra device usually needs its own license, roughly $9.95 to $19.95 a month each.
So a realistic Clover front desk for a school runs about $30 to $105 a month in software, before processing fees. I'm telling you that now because you should know what you're signing up for.
Clover Processing Rates
Buying direct, Clover charges about 2.3% to 2.6% plus 10 cents for in-person cards and about 3.5% plus 10 cents for keyed or online payments. Through a dealer or bank, the rate depends on who sets up your account.
If someone quotes you a rate that looks too good, ask for the full breakdown in writing. The fees usually show up somewhere else: monthly minimums, PCI fees, statement fees.
Clover vs Square for a Martial Arts Gym
Square is where a lot of new schools start, and that's not a bad call. On Square's free plan you pay 2.6% plus 15 cents in person, 3.3% plus 30 cents online and 3.5% plus 15 cents keyed in. Paid plans cost $49 or $149 a month and lower the rate a little.
Square is easy and cheap to start. Clover gives you more control, better hardware, and the option to run a cash discount program through a dealer. Once you're doing real volume, that last part matters most.
Clover vs Gym Software: Kicksite, Zen Planner, Spark, Pike13 and Gymdesk
Here's the honest part. Clover is not membership software. It doesn't track attendance, belt rank or class schedules. The platforms built for martial arts do that, and most of them handle dues too. Here's what they cost, based on published pricing checked in September 2026:
- Clover: About $30 to $105/mo plus hardware. Built for payments, retail and reports. Strong at the front desk.
- Square: $0 to $149/mo. Built for new schools that want a simple setup. Handles retail.
- Kicksite: From $49/mo (up to 25 students). Built for martial arts memberships. Limited retail.
- Zen Planner: From $99/mo. Built for memberships and scheduling. Limited retail.
- Gymdesk: From $75/mo (up to 50 members). Built for memberships, and lets you bring your own processor. Limited retail.
- Pike13: From $139/mo (annual). Built for scheduling-heavy studios. Limited retail.
- Spark Membership: $199/mo ($99/mo promo first year). Built as an all-in-one for martial arts. Limited retail.
Most of these platforms run your card payments through their own processor, often around 2.9% plus a fixed fee. That's the fee nobody looks at, and on monthly dues it adds up every single month.
The Setup I'd Recommend for a Growing School
For a school with 50 or more students, this is what I'd set up:
- Membership software for dues and attendance. Pick the one you like. If it lets you bring your own processor, you have options.
- ACH for monthly dues. Bank transfers cost a lot less than cards for the same student billed every month. Elite Merchant Solutions offers ACH processing.
- Clover or a terminal at the front desk with a cash discount program. Gear, privates, belt tests and drop-ins all go through it. Clover works, and so does a Valor terminal with built-in dual pricing.
Cash Discount and Dual Pricing for Gyms
A cash discount program shows two prices, cash and card. The card price covers the processing cost, so the school stops eating the fee. When it's set up and posted the right way, it's legal and compliant. I broke that down in is the cash discount program legal in Nevada.
The math is simple. If you take $20,000 a month in cards and pay around 3% all in, that's about $600 a month, or $7,200 a year. That's a new mat floor. That's a coach's paycheck.
I built a page just for gym owners that walks through it: dual pricing for martial arts schools. If you want Clover set up with cash discount in Las Vegas, here's my Clover POS cash discount page.
So Which One Should You Use?
Under 30 students: start with Square or a simple reader. Keep your costs low while you build your roster.
50 students and up, or $10,000 a month in card payments: it's time to look at what you're really paying. Get a statement review, put the front desk on a cash discount program, and move dues to ACH where you can.
Big on scheduling and memberships, small on retail: a gym platform like Kicksite, Zen Planner or Gymdesk may be all you need. Just look hard at the processing rate inside it.
There's no single answer. It depends on how many students you have, how you collect, and where you want the school to be in five years.
Coming Next: Part Two
In Part Two I'll cover the cheapest ways to take payments the right way when you're just starting out. What Square really costs once you're running real volume, whether you need a terminal at all, and when it's time to move on.
